I’m walking to support mental health research

Did you know that 1 in 5 people experience symptoms of mental illness each year?

In fact, every day in Australia, 8 people will die from suicide.

Mental illness can be debilitating and can have a devastating impact on not only those living with it, but those around them.

This October, I’ll be walking to make a difference to the lives of people touched by mental illness and suicide!

I'm fundraising to raise money for life-changing research into treatment and prevention of mental illness, as well as vital support services.

It would mean so much to me if you'd support my walk this October.

Last wig walk

Thursday 29th Oct
Just wanted to let you know that Deryn has completed her last walk with her clown wig. I will continue to don my colourful clothes for another 3 days before packing it away for special occasions.

Step inside, be what you believe.

Thursday 29th Oct
I found this great chalk circle in my street today. I wasn't able to fit the whole thing in my upload to this page but it says, "Step inside, be what you believe"

Such a colourful walk!

Saturday 24th Oct
So excited to be able to walk with my team mate Inga (and Sonny) who is also walking in a clown wig with Deryn

Clowning around!

Friday 2nd Oct
Deryn has promised to walk 1km for every $100 over and above the first $400 that I raise. Thankyou to everyone that helped make this happen and were so generous in their donations. Deryn has completed her first km in a clown wig. Only 5km left! I am very happy to have reached my target of $1000 however Perhaps any further donations could be made to my team members Inga and Trina.

Strutting my stuff for the Black Dog Institute.

Matching Outfits

Tuesday 15th Sep
Did you know that Deryn has committed to Walking 1km in a clown wig for every $100 over and above $400 that I earn? (Max of 1km a day in clown wig) Because of all my amazing supporters, Deryn is now getting ready to walk 1km a day for 5 days wearing a clown wig. Let's see if we can turn that into a whole week with another $200. Deryn even has a matching face mask to wear on our walks together in October. Can't wait to go out in public with our matching clothes. Combo.

I've got more mail from the Black Dog Institute!

New Clothes

Saturday 12th Sep
I am getting ready for my walks in October and I am so excited to have my new colourful walking suit.

So excited- I am bouncing for Joy.

Thursday 10th Sep
I just received my very own personalised email from the Black Dog Institute......

Dear Combo,

Usually I wouldn’t write to Doggos but in this case I have made an exception. I am thrilled, not only that you have signed up to One Foot Forward, but you can also read and respond to emails.

I think it’s actually a marvel that if people knew might make this year a bit better.

So from a Black Dogger here to our new wonderful canine hero WOOF WOOF!

Best wishes

Thursday 10th Sep

My name is Combo, I am living with Deryn in Melbourne.

I am very lucky, I have always been a very happy dog and wake up bouncing every morning and excited to go on my next walk.  I don't think that I have ever experienced any sort of mental illness however sadly that is not so for a lot of people in this world.  Did you know that approximately 20% of all people experience problems with their mental health?

I also found out that in Australia, 8 people die by suicide every day and that Suicide is the leading cause of death in people between the ages of 15 and 44.  These are unacceptable statistics and leaves a trail of devastation in the lives of those left behind.

I would really like it if you could help me to change this awful statistic. By clicking the donate button and sending a donation to the Black Dog Institute, you will help fund research into suicide prevention strategies and support people who are currently living with mental illness in Australia.  It doesn't have to be much because every little bit makes a difference.

I will help by continuing to walk the streets of Melbourne every day and spreading the word about the amazing work that the Black Dog Institute does.

Thankyou very much for supporting my walk.
