Support My Walk for Mental Health Research

Did you know that 1 in 5 people experience symptoms of mental illness each year?

In fact, every day in Australia, 8 people will die by suicide.

Mental illness can be debilitating and can have a devastating impact on not only those living with it, but those around them.

This October, I’ll be taking part in One Foot Forward to show people living with mental illness that they are not alone.

I'm walking to raise funds for the Black Dog Institute to support crucial mental health research and support services to help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.

It would mean so much to me if you'd support my walk this October.

Together, we can create a mentally healthier world, for everyone.

My Updates

Why am I talking about my Dad’s suicide, for the first time publicly?

Hi…. it’s me - and this month I’m asking for your support. Any donation, no matter how small makes a difference in supporting mental health and suicide prevention. My Dad died by suicide 20 years ago. So what prompted me to talk about it for the first time in a public forum? I want to make a difference. My husband Jamie is the same age now my Dad was when we lost him, that really hit home for me how much of life Dad missed out on. On average, 8 people die by suicide in Australia each day. We can make a difference.

Any support you can offer:

Father’s Day

Today marks 21 years since Fathers Day wasn’t a day that was anything other than a celebration. Whilst I am fortunate to have been able to spend the day celebrating Jamie Benjamin as a great Dad for the past 10 years, Fathers Day is a day filled with mixed emotions.

In the early days after Dad’s passing, it was a pretty tough day. Not just the day itself, but the lead up. Today I want to say to anyone who doesn’t have their Dad near, I see you. It can be really tough.

To all those who lost their Dad to the Black Dog at a younger age than I did - missed Fathers Day breakfasts at school, missed opportunities for cards and gifts from the Fathers Day stall. I see you.

Today is a day to reflect on the great Dad Pete was, but also to shed a tear that he will never know Ethan, Seth or Varenna…. Or even meet Jamie. He never made it to my wedding, the birth of my kids or my high school graduation.

In October, Luke Dawson & I, who both lost our Dad’s in the same tragic way, will be walking to raise funds for mental health. Our team is “This one is for the Dads”

A huge shout out to anyone who has already sponsored us - I will be walking 100km with the aim of raising $5000 personally and $10,000 as a team.

Today, can you spare some dollars to support those suffering from mental health challenges and help us to reduce the number of people lost each and every year? Even $10 makes a difference.

What’s the back story?

One for the Dad’s

We are two mates - Kate Benjamin and Luke Dawson. We have known each other for a long time, well over 10 years. What we didn’t know until a few years ago, because really it doesn’t get spoken about, is that we have a shared experience.

And it’s not an experience you would wish on anyone.

Both our Dad’s died by suicide. This year marks the 20th anniversary for both of us and our families since we last saw these much loved men. We are on a mission to raise awareness and raise funds in honour of our Dad’s who left us far too soon. Too soon to meet our kids, too soon to come to our weddings and sadly too soon to get the help they needed to recover from the black dog.

How can you help? We have set a target for this October to clock up some km’s and raise funds for the Black Dog Institute to support crucial mental health research and support services to help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.

August is recruitment month. We are looking for an army of friends and supporters who would like to walk in our team - “One for the Dads”. Km’s are tracked individually, and we will aim to get together whenever we can.
