I committed to 350 this October for my dearest wife Sahu, who left me at 35. Black Dog and their work was ever so important to her. I walk this in her honour.

Sahu's Walk to Remember

Sahu’s walk to remember.

In August this year my wife Sahu passed away, aged 35.

Sahu lived a life led by compassion and generosity for those who carried the heaviest of burdens. She had a heart for bringing hope for the hopeless. In her words, she wanted to build a lighthouse to help loved ones find each other in the darkness.

Sahu was continuous and ardent supporter of the Black Dog institute and their aim of delivering high quality mental health support to those who need it most. Crucially, the Black Dog institute excels at advancing knowledge of mental health with medical practitioners.

In her honour and memory, I’ll be taking part of Black Dog’s One Foot Forward challenge. As she left us at 35, my goal by October’s end is to reach 350km and raise $3500.

To this end, I’ll leave home on the 15th and not return until the goals are reached.

Although I entered this challenge to journey alongside Sahu once more as a solo endeavour, I’d like to open this up to anyone who’d like to join in solidarity and remembrance of Sahu.

You’re most welcome to join however you wish. Whether through words of reflection, financially contributing to Black Dog, or joining the team to add some Km’s (I could always use a few).

Anything to build one more lighthouse.

Lighthouse to Lighthouse

Dear all,

Just an 11th hour update as the challenge comes to a close tomorrow. 273km down and 77km to go. The amazing race we always wanted to do.

I had hoped to write a daily blog but words were never there. Grief is the great thief. Thankfully, love and memories help restore what is lost. 

The walk was filled with many ‘firsts’ (such as our first dance at Chipping Norton wharf, first picnic at Clifton Gardens). It also passed many ‘lasts’, too many lasts, including the hospitals where she fought her hardest. 

The last stretch of the walk has gone from North Lighthouse to South Lighthouse- from Watson Bay lighthouse to Botany Bay. The gloomy weather made the importance of lighthouses all too real; and Sahu’s desire to bring light all the more meaningful. It’s fitting that the last lighthouse (Henry Head, La Perouse) was the most isolated and least appealing. It made me reflect on those for whom Sahu had the most compassion.

My last goal post is Stanwell Park Beach where Sahu was sent to rest. From there is the last trek to my home. 

Lastly, I wanted to give my overwhelming thanks to all those who have supported; financially, moral support, some food or drink or a place to crash. Having her memory kept alive and the essential work of Black Dog further funded has meant the world.

 

Walking for Mental Health

Did you know that 1 in 5 Australians experience symptoms of mental illness each year?

This October, our team is taking part in One Foot Forward to help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.

We're walking to raise funds for Black Dog Institute to put ground-breaking new mental health treatment, education, and digital services into the hands of the people who need them most.

It would mean so much to me if you donated to support our walk.

Together, we can create better mental health for all Australians.
