I’m walking in solidarity this October for my suicide awareness for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men. Having just lost my younger brother earlier this year to mental health and drug abuse, pain and trauma; I think it is only fitting that I dedicate this journey to him, and every other man in our community who haven't been able to access support and culturally appropriate services. Support My Walk for Mental Health Research and culturally safer spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men.

Sadly, 1 in 5 people experience a mental illness each year, which is even smaller and closer to home for us in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities; with our men having the highest rates of suicide and mental health.

These statistics hit all too close to home for me, having lost my younger brother earlier this year to mental health, trauma, pain, drug and alcohol addictions. My brother, Daniel was only 36 years old when he passed away. A young Aboriginal man with his whole life ahead of him and leaving behind 3 sons.

But this is a story that is all too relatable to us in our community, since the beginning of the year, I can think of 5 Aboriginal men that we have lost to mental illnesses and suicide in our Port Adelaide area alone. It is a reality for us as black fullas and sometimes we grieve so heavily that we end up just going on about our lives and never really have a healthier coping strategy. For me, I have found that walking has been a good way to grieve and look after myself, get myself out of my house and connect with others.

This October, Myself and others from Tauondi are walking 150km in One Foot Forward to help our mob impacted by mental illness and suicide.
