Support My Walk for Mental Health Research

Did you know that 1 in 5 Australians experience symptoms of mental illness each year?

This October, I’m taking part in One Foot Forward to help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.

I'm walking to raise funds for Black Dog Institute to put ground-breaking new mental health treatment, education, and digital services into the hands of the people who need them most.

It would mean so much to me if you donated to support my walk.

Together, we can create better mental health for all Australians.

My Updates

Day 31

That’s a wrap!! This month, I've walked 101km to support Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide. And my challenge ends today! 🥹 It was great to top it off with joining some of my work colleagues who also participated in the challenge 🫶🏼 🙏🏼THANK YOU to everyone who has followed my journey, supported me, and helped me raise funds for the Black Dog Institute to help put ground-breaking new mental health treatment, education and digital services into the hands of the people who need them most 🧡 It's not too late if you'd still like to support me with a donation (no matter how big or small)

Day 30

Done: 100.8km So bloody proud of myself right now! 🤩 after a morning walk and an evening walk I clicked over 100km! I can’t even believe I’ve managed to double my original walking goal, and with one day of the challenge still to go! 🤯 It wasn't easy, but together we’ve helped fund crucial mental health research and support services at Black Dog Institute to help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide... so it was worth it! 🫶🏼 Thank you to everyone who has sponsored me so far 🙏🏼 most recently my dear family friend Kirsha Baker who donated today 🧡 it means so much and your support kept me going throughout the month💪🏼 If you haven't had a chance to support my challenge yet, there's still time (before my final post of the challenge tomorrow night) 🥹

Day 29

Done: 91.5km 🙏🏼 Thank you to my SJ23 Year 7 mama friends Tania, Team Prats and Claudette for your donations today! 🧡🧡🧡 It made the slightly cold and wet walk tonight totally worth it! I even broke out into a bit of a jog! 😅 So close to doubling my original walking goal! I can’t even believe it! 🤯 But I’m even more mind-blown by the generosity of everyone who has donated 🥹 you are all making an impact on the lives of those experiencing mental illness and their loved ones 🧡 There’s 2 days left of this challenge and I’m still hoping to inspire you to support this important cause.

Day 28

Done: 86.1km Despite the cold, gloomy morning I managed to add more to walk and I’m well on my way to reaching the 100km milestone by the end of the week! 💪🏼 I’d love your support to get me to the end! 🙏🏼 Most of us will know someone experiencing mental illness, or even experience it ourselves, at some point in our life 🧡 Blackdog Institute strives for better diagnoses and treatment, better knowledge, better research and better programs that lead to better classrooms, better workplaces, better community health and better pathways towards reconciliation and healing🫶🏼 Your donation can help achieve better mental health for all Australians.

Day 27

Done: 80.8km This month, I’ve been taking part in One Foot Forward to show people living with mental illness that they are not alone 🫶🏼 and this is the last week of my challenge! Sadly, 1 in 5 people experience a mental illness each year. Which is why I’m raising funds for the Black Dog Institute to put ground-breaking new mental health treatment, education, and digital services into the hands of the people who need them the most 🧡 Every dollar makes a difference, and I'd love your support to help me bring it home strong 💪🏼

Day 26

Done: 80.8km Finishing off the week hitting 80km!! 🏃🏽‍♀️ Morning walk with my bestie Anna T Mdl, followed by brekkie and coffee ☕️ we’ve already booked in our walking date for next month! We talked all things including life’s challenges and tips to overcome them. Sometimes all you need is a listening ear to make life feel that extra bit lighter 🧡😌 If you’ve been following along on my journey this month, and have been inspired to support mental health research and services, please consider donating 🙏🏼🫶🏼

Day 25

Done: 75.7km Added another 5.3km to the tally after a morning walk with Ron today. But not posting a walking photo. Instead, here’s some photos of me filling my cup wit two of my besties! 💕 Such a great night getting creative 🎨 with lots of laughs 😂 So good for the mind and the soul 😌 🙏🏼 Thank you to 🧡 our besties Jason Amber Dray for your donation tonight, tipping us over the $1500 mark! 😲 Less than a week to go for the challenge 🗓️ let’s finish strong 💪🏼 to show the 1 in 5 Australians who experience a mental illness each year, that they are not alone.

Day 24

Done: 70.4km Last week I contemplated potentially walking 60km, and here I am with over 70km under my belt! 100km is now looking very possible! 🏃🏽‍♀️ 🙏🏼 Thank you to 🧡 my lovely cousin Samantha for your donation today, which has taken my current fundraising total $23 shy of $1500 😲 thank you all so much for the support!!! 🙏🏼 There’s one week left of the challenge 🗓️ still plenty of time to add more kms and funds in support of creating better mental health for all. Will it be you who tips us over $1,500?? 💁🏻‍♀️

Day 23

Done: 65.1km I’ve walked an extra 65km in 23 days! I’ve developed a love for early morning walks 😍 the colours of the sunrise are beautiful 🌅 and I think I’ve found a favourite spot on my laps around the field 🤩 just a few of the benefits of the One Foot Forward Challenge! The most important benefit though is the funds we raise to support crucial mental health research and support services at Black Dog Institute 🧡 Will you help me support the 1 in 5 people who experience a mental illness each year? 🙏🏼

Day 22

Done: 59.6km Just shy of 60km after an early 5km walk before the heat set in 🥵 I might get used to this walking up early business 😉 even had time to give the plants a much needed watering too 🌱 🙏🏼 Thank you to 🧡my fabulous friend Lisa and 🧡my beautiful fellow basketball mama Emma 🏀 for answering my latest call for donations 🫶🏼 you are helping to make a difference in the life of many Australians. 📣 From 10am (AEDT) tomorrow morning, donations will again be DOUBLED (up to $75k). So if you’re wanting to donate, set a reminder 🔔 to do it tomorrow to see if we can claim a share of Safety Mate’s pledge! 🙌🏼

Day 21

Done: 54.6km Another early morning walk, with some “hitchhikers” on board that really tested my resilience! 🪰 caught a few of them in today’s selfie 🤳 It’s been a bit quiet on the donation front the last couple of days 🤭 So I’ve included a reminder of what your donation could help support 👇🏼 when it is all added TOGETHER we can achieve a lot!

Day 19

Done: 50.5km 🥳 That moment when you hit your 50km goal!! 💪🏼 every km is a bonus from here! 🙏🏼 So thankful for the donations received last night from my supportive fam 🧡 Mama & Papa 🧡 Tita Jo 🧡 Tito Jun! We have a busy day ahead so I made sure to get my walk in early 🏃🏽‍♀️ starting to get used to the flies too 🪰🤪

Day 18

Done: 46.4km To go: 3.6km 🧡🙏🏼 Thank you to my wonderful friend Grace for your donation and doing your part in supporting mental health research and education Getting in early again today to clock more kms. Looks like I’ll be closing “the ring” in the next day or so 🥳 but there’s still 2 weeks left of walking and fundraising to do 🏃🏽‍♀️🫶🏼 If you have already donated, THANK YOU! 🤗 If you have been thinking about donating and are able to (any amount makes a big difference!) please DONATE 🙏🏼 If you’re not in a position to donate, but want to HELP please share my posts or donation link with your friends and family 🫶🏼 TOGETHER we can create better mental health for all.

Day 17

Done: 43km To go: 7km Enjoyed the cotton candy clouds ☁️ and watching the sunrise 🌅 during my 3km walk this morning (would probably have been 4km if it weren’t for the flies 🪰 that were also up early!) 🤣 I’m down to single digits now until I hit my 50km goal, but I won’t stop there! I pledge to keep walking until the end of this challenge 🏃🏽‍♀️ who know’s how far I’ll get? 60km? 80km? Maybe even 100km?! 😱 With that, I’m hoping that you’ll continue to support me with helping Black Dog Institute put ground-breaking new mental health treatment, education and digital services into the hands of the people who need them the most 🧡 If you have already donated, THANK YOU! 🤗 If you have been thinking about donating and are able to (any amount makes a big difference!) please DONATE 🙏🏼 If you’re not in a position to donate, but want to HELP please share my posts or donation link with your friends and family TOGETHER we can create better mental health for all.

Day 16

Done: 40km To go: 10km 🧡 🙏🏼 Thank you to my beautiful friend Elaine for recently sponsoring my One Foot Forward walk to support Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide. I'm just over two weeks into my challenge and so far I've walked 40km throughout the month to help change lives. I’m planning an early morning walk tomorrow to add more kms 🏃🏽‍♀️☀️ 🗓️ There's two weeks to go, and today I'm asking for your support to help me complete my challenge and help Black Dog Institute put ground-breaking new mental health treatment, education and digital services into the hands of the people who need them the most. If you can spare a few I would greatly appreciate you sponsoring my walk to create better mental health for all 🙏🏼🧡

Day 15

Done: 40km To go: 10km Officially half way through the challenge and this morning I added more kms to my 50km goal. I have clocked 40km 🏃🏽‍♀️ and thanks to generous donors I have received double of my original fundraising goal! 🌟 I’m not stopping here though! I’ll keep putting one foot forward for the remainder of the month (even beyond the 50km) to raise awareness and funds for mental health research 🧡💪🏼 I’m hoping you will continue to support me and if you can spare a few I would greatly appreciate you donating to this cause 🙏🏼

Day 14

Done: 35km To go: 15km OMG!! 😃 we did it!! Cracked the $1,000 mark!! 🧡 Thank you to my sis in law, Jess for tipping us over the line tonight! 🧡 A huge thank you to EVERYONE who has contributed to get this fundraiser to where we are today! 💁🏻‍♀️ With these funds we can support a researcher to develop innovative programs to help 1,268 people with suicidal thoughts per day to seek help when they need it most. We’ve proven that every little bit helps, so if you can spare a few I would greatly appreciate your support for my 50km challenge for mental health research 🙏🏼

Day 13

Done: 35km To go: 15km Squeezed in 3km after work and before watching the boys’ first basketball game for the season. I would’ve normally just lounged about after work, but pushed through for this important cause 💪🏼 Every little bit helps, so if you can spare a few I would greatly appreciate your support for my 50km challenge for mental health research 🙏🏼⬇️

Day 12

Done: 32km To go: 18km Almost didn’t go out for a walk tonight. With the sudden change in weather I could have easily just stayed home, or turned back around as soon as I felt the first raindrop. But I didn’t. I just kept putting one foot forward 👟 It also helped watching a beautiful sunset and having Mel Robins in my ear! First time listening to her podcast and first time using AirPods. I recommend checking out Mel Robins if you haven’t already 🌟 Also, please help a girl out - how do you keep AirPods in your ear?!?! I had to wear a sweatband to keep them from falling out!! 🤪

Day 11

Done: 28km To go: 22km I took a rest day today, but will be back adding kms tomorrow 🏃🏽‍♀️ Thank you for getting behind me yesterday on World Mental Health Day 🌏: 🧡 The Falzon Fam 🧡 Mum & Dad and 🧡 my godmother Lynn 🙏🏼 Your donations brought us closer to Level 4 impact! 🌟 $1,000 can support a researcher to develop innovative programs to help 1,268 people with suicidal thoughts per day to seek help when they need it most! This is so important, especially when 50% of people living with mental illness will not seek professional help 😔 Can you help us crack the $1k?!

Day 10 - world mental health day

Done: 28km To go: 22km Got my walk in early today to share this announcement 📢 Today is World Mental Health Day 🌏 A day dedicated to promoting understanding of mental health education, awareness and advocacy. To help you make a big impact today, your donations will be DOUBLED 😲, up to a total of $150,000 thanks to Black Dog Institute’s generous partner Safety Mate! 🎉 If you’ve been following my challenge and have been thinking of donating, today is a great day to do it! Maybe together we can crack the $1k?!

Day 9

Done: 25km To go: 25km 🙏🏼 Thank you to my basketball family - Peter and Bernadette for your generous donations today 🧡🏀 Your donations gave me the extra push to crack the 25km mark tonight in my One Foot Forward t-shirt!! 💪🏼 together with the donations from other family and friends over the past 10 days, we hit Level 3 impact level! 🙌🏼🌟 If you are considering a donation to support this cause, keep an eye out for my post tomorrow 👀 I’ll share the next milestone we’re aiming for - and a special post about World Mental Health Day 🌏

Day 8

Done: 22.5km To go: 27.5km The 5 of us almost got blown away by what feels like a brewing storm 🌬️ but so proud of my boys (especially my littlest) for walking (and sometimes running) the 3km 🥹 Did you know 1 in 5 Australians experience mental illness each year? Are you able to helps us support Black Dog Institute provide better mental health for Australians? 🙏🏼

Day 7

Done: 19.5km To go: 30.5km Loving the extended daylight during my evening walks 🌅 Thanks to an Anonymous donor today (I know who you are 🧡) I am now just $4 shy of the Leve 3 impact level! $680 can help fund critical research to teach 1,068 children with anxiety or depressive symptoms healthier ways of thinking 👦🏻👧🏼 Will you be the one that helps us achieve that milestone?! 🙏🏼

Day 6

Done: 15km To go: 35km I took a rest day today after reaching 15km yesterday. It included an afternoon well spent with some of our besties who are more like family 💞 Among the belly laughs, we had conversations about friendship, mental health and support networks. I later realised that I had invested in positive psychology today 🌟 Here’s some information from the Black Dog Institute website: “Positive psychology is a relatively new branch of psychology that shifts the focus from what is clinically wrong, to the promotion of wellbeing and the creation of a satisfying life filled with meaning, pleasure, engagement, positive relationships and accomplishment…. The most fundamental finding from positive psychology is that strong personal relationships have the greatest impact on your satisfaction with life. Make sure you invest time and energy in your friends and family.”

Day 5

Done: 15km To go: 35km Despite a quiet day on the donation front, I continued to put one foot forward for another walk. Adding kms to my 50km goal and still so grateful for all the generous donations so far 🙏

Day 4

Done: 12km To go: 38km Thank you for your donations: 🧡 my lovely cousin Vilma 🧡 my beautiful bestie Anna A special thanks to Anna for joining me on my early morning walk today and topping it off with a coffee and donut catch up ☕️ Over 30 years of friendship - it’s so important to find your special people that you know are always in your corner 💕 Thanks filling my cup today Anna 🙏🏼

Day 3

Done: 3km To go: 41km So overwhelmed with the donations received over night! 🥹 Thank you to: 🧡 my lovely aunty Ma Corazon 🧡 my beautiful friend Rachelle 🧡 my favourite sister Dorothy 🧡 my wonderful cousin Arleen Together you pushed me past the $500 donation goal that I had set at just 3 days ago! 🌟 Encouraged by your donations I got to work early to walk along our shared path. Thanks to my colleague Rabab for joining me on my first ever time on the shared path in the 6 years that I’ve been at the M7!! Grateful to Rabab was also the one who registered our workplace for this challenge 🙏🏼 We are doing this TOGETHER!!

Day 2

Done: 3km To go: 44km Thanks Jason Encarnacion for your donation today 🙏🏼 Did you know your donation alone can now help 20 students feel seen and safe because their teachers are trained to support their mental wellbeing? So appreciative of all the donations that have been made so far. It’s given me the motivation to get out for my walk tonight, despite it being slightly cooler. Thankful also for the great lighting💡at the sporting reserve up the road, making me feel safe durng my two laps around!

Day 1

Done: 3km To go: 47km Super special first walk for this challenge as I was joined by my supportive family. It was a pleasant spring walk, with a beautiful sunset to top it off. All good things for the mind, body and soul 🧡 Thank you to my family who have already donated to this important cause 🙏🏼 Looking forward to keeping you all updated on this journey 🫶🏼
