Support My Walk for Mental Health Research

Did you know that 1 in 5 people experience symptoms of mental illness each year?

In fact, every day in Australia, 8 people will die from suicide.

Mental illness can be debilitating and can have a devastating impact on not only those living with it, but those around them.

This October, I’ll be walking to make a difference to the lives of people touched by mental illness and suicide!

I'm fundraising to raise money for life-changing research into treatment and prevention of mental illness, as well as vital support services.

It would mean so much to me if you'd support my walk this October.

My Updates

So where does the money go?

Monday 13th Sep
My primary motivation for participating in the One Foot Forward Challenge is to raise awareness around the signs of mental illness and suicide. My hope is that more people can learn how to have a conversation with someone who is struggling.

But where will the money we are raising go to? One initiative is this one - Under the Radar. BlackDog are driving innovative research into the reasons why people, in particular men, do not seek help, with the hope that understanding this phenomenon will aid them in developing new techniques for delivering support services. I think this is fantastic!

You can read more about this research here:

Thanks everyone - new target of $4000!

RU OK Day and Suicide Prevention Day

Saturday 11th Sep
This was a big week for anyone who experiences mental illness or has family and friends who they support.

The conversations we encourage on these days can be hard, there's no question. But they are so important to have.

If you are worried about someone, reach out. If you are someone who is struggling to connect, then the professional support offered by Black Dog, BeyondBlue and Lifeline really can make a difference.

Thanks so much for all the wonderful support I've received so far for my One Foot Forward Challenge. I'm excited to get started :)

Wow thankyou!

Friday 27th Aug
In less than 24 hours I reached my first target and I haven't even started yet! Thankyou so much for your kindness.

Never before has the mental health agenda been more on people's minds - we are all affected by these challenges one way or another. So thankyou for acknowledging this.

I'm going to up the ante and add another $1000 to my goal :)

Why am I walking?

Wednesday 25th Aug
My younger brother David died by suicide. He suffered greatly while he was alive and my family have suffered since he’s been gone, trying to make sense and wishing we had been able to do more.

The truth is I didn’t know what to do or how to help him and I am certain that if I’d known more I could have made a difference, and maybe he would be with us today.

So I am walking this October, to raise awareness for mental illness and to passionately encourage as many people as I can to learn how to support someone with a mental illness.

It may save someone’s life.
