Mental Health – The Black Dog This is a topic I am very passionate about. Depression is something that affects so many people, yet it is still something we often don’t talk about. But why not? Everyone has feelings. Everyone has difficult periods in their lives. Sometimes the Black Dog comes along, and when he starts barking, he can be incredibly loud and distracting. He can make everything feel harder, make us feel isolated, and convince us that we are on our own. But we aren't. The more openly we talk about depression and how we are feeling, the more comfortable others may feel speaking up when they are struggling. There should be no shame in saying, “I'm not okay.” There should be no shame in asking for help. In fact, asking for help when you are feeling at your lowest is courageous — not shameful. We all experience difficult times, and sometimes the Black Dog's bark is louder than we can manage on our own. That's when we need to know that it is okay to reach out, and that there are people who will listen, care and help. But there is one important thing we need to remember: We can't help if we don't know you need help. So let's start talking. Let's make it normal to ask, “Are you okay?” — and, more importantly, make it safe for someone to answer honestly. Because when the Black Dog starts barking, you don't have to face him alone. You are not alone, and asking for help is not a weakness. It is one of the strongest things you can do.

Support My Walk for Mental Health Research

Did you know that 1 in 5 Australians experience a mental illness each year?

This October, I’m taking part in One Foot Forward to help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.

I'm walking to raise funds for Black Dog Institute to put ground-breaking new mental health treatment, education, and digital services into the hands of the people who need them most.

It would mean so much to me if you donated to support my walk.

Together, we can create better mental health for all Australians.

Mental Health – The Black Dog

This is a topic I am very passionate about.

But there is one important thing we need to remember:

We can't help if we don't know you need help.
