Support Our Walk for Mental Health Research

Long story short… although I have a feeling this won’t actually be a short story, I ask that you stay with me until the end.
I promise you, by the time you get there, you’ll either want to join our team, understand why we decided to take on this challenge ourselves, or perhaps donate to a cause that is incredibly close to our hearts.
Three weeks ago, at my football game, I turned to a mate and jokingly asked, “Mate, you’re here every game… are you dating someone on the team?”
His response was simple: “No. I’m just keeping myself busy.”
What I didn’t realise at the time was just how much those words meant.
Fourteen months earlier, this good mate had lost his beautiful two-year-old son — under circumstances that no parent should ever have to experience.
There are no words that can truly explain the pain of losing a child. It is something no parent should ever have to face, and certainly not something anyone should have to face feeling alone.
As a family, as friends and as a community, we want you to know that we will stand beside you through the deepest and darkest days. We may not always have the right words, we may not be able to take away the pain, but we can be there. We can listen. We can check in. We can simply sit beside you when there is nothing else to say.
To our Port Stephens family, please take a moment to understand the name of our team.
It isn’t just a name. It represents who we are, what we stand for, and most importantly, what it means to be there for one another.
Although we have been friends for many years, every time I see our mate now, my heart is filled with pride with how he still shows up, gets involved with our community and with an infectious smile on his face, even though his closest people know he is fighting his demons silently.
This cause is close to our hearts, but it is also close to the hearts of so many others who are navigating their own journeys through life, through loss, grief, trauma, triumph, heartbreak and tragedy.
Sometimes, people don't need us to fix anything.
They don't need questions.
They don't need judgement.
They don't need opinions.
They just need someone to say:
“I'm here.”
So that is what we want to do.
Be there for each other.
When life is amazing.
When life feels impossible.
When words fail us.
And especially when someone feels like they are facing it all alone.
Because none of us know what someone else is carrying behind their smile.
This is why we have taken on this challenge.
For our mate.
For his beautiful boy.
For his family.
For our own loved ones.
For those we have lost.
For those still fighting.
And for anyone who may one day need someone to simply stand beside them and say, “You’re not alone.”

Did you know that 1 in 5 Australians experience a mental illness each year?

This October, our team is taking part in One Foot Forward to help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.

We're walking to raise funds for Black Dog Institute to put ground-breaking new mental health treatment, education, and digital services into the hands of the people who need them most.

It would mean so much to me if you donated to support our walk.

Together, we can create better mental health for all Australians.
