Support My Walk for Mental Health Research

Did you know that 1 in 5 Australians experience symptoms of mental illness each year?

In fact, every day in Australia, 9 people will die by suicide.

Mental illness can be debilitating and can have a devastating impact on not only those living with it, but those around them.

This October, I’ll be taking part in One Foot Forward to help reduce the impact of mental illness and suicide.

I'm walking to raise funds for Black Dog Institute, so that they can put ground-breaking new mental health treatment, education, and digital services into the hands of the people who need them most.

It would mean so much to me if you donated to support my walk.

Together, we can create better mental health for all Australians.

My Updates

Day 1

Didn’t get to walk this morning due to an early start. walked this afternoon. small bonus of no snakes!

Talk and walk…

Things people know about me: 1. I walk, a lot, usually on my own 2. I work, also A LOT (I generally love what I do even though it’s never easy) What you may not know: 1. I’m a wife (he rarely features in my photos, cause he doesn’t walk as much as me 🤣) 2. I’m mum of 3 (and 3 dogs…. They’re family too) 3. I’m an aunt and great aunt 4. I’m a sister 5. I’m a daughter 6. I’m a friend to many (I love collecting people and over the years, I have collected some pretty fab people) 7. I like the idea of service and of being available for family and friends and the work team in my life, because, let’s face it, the idea of a perfect life is unreal and no one I know doesn’t have something going on that doesn’t impact them 8. I feel like I’ve never had so many demands for my time and attention than I’m experiencing right now Yesterday was R U OK? day and I actually went to my GP for a mental health plan. Turns out I need a little more care than I thought - I struggle with the standards that I set for myself, the responsibilities that I take on as a carer for the people in my life and I am dealing with grief and the loss of my sister, who I loved so much. So now I’m going to be raw and candid, and maybe lay myself a little bare. I have entered into a mental health care plan that will hopefully help me navigate through the grief, stress and expectations. But what I really want to share is that this morning I walked with a friend. The endorphins were high when we finished (she sets a cracking pace 🏃‍♀️) but what was absolutely brilliant about it was the shared care that we have for each other. I love walking, but doing it with a friend pushes it from 10/10 to 100/10, no kidding. And if I could do it every day, I honestly think I wouldn’t need medication. So, where am I heading with this post? If you need a friend and don’t mind talking while walking, I’m the friend to call. The only catch - most of my walking will be around Walgett and the central west of NSW! And during October, when I’m chasing 150km for the Black Dog Institute , you’ll also be helping me stay on track with my 150km goal that is about creating better mental health for all. So if you’re up for walk, DM me and we’ll make a date. #walkandtalktherapy #walkandtalk #askingforhelpisnotaweakness #mentalhealthawareness #blackdoginstitute #onefootforward https://www.onefootforward.org.au/fundraisers/megandixon/one-foot-forward
