About Me and My Walk for Mental Health Research

Yes, my name really is Mick Taylor, No I'm not from Wolf Creek! I'm from Streaky Bay in South Australia where I'm a volunteer in the South Australian Country Fire Service.

I'm also a retired Air Force veteran of 25 years.

Between my military and firefighting careers, I've known many people (including myself) who have suffered varying degrees of mental health issues. Through the CFS, I have become a registered mental health first aid provider as we are sometimes the first or only agency able to assist.

I'm walking in the memory of friends and loved ones who have suffered, some lost the fight, and in the hope that my help reduces mental health suffering of all the Australian community.

Did you know that 1 in 5 Australians experience symptoms of mental illness each year?

Mental illness can be debilitating and can have a devastating impact on not only those living with it, but those around them.

This October, I’m taking part in One Foot Forward to help reduce the impact of mental illness and suicide.

I'm walking to raise funds for Black Dog Institute to put ground-breaking new mental health treatment, education, and digital services into the hands of the people who need them most.

It would mean so much to me if you donated to support my walk.

Together, we can create better mental health for all Australians.

My Updates

3 days 'till we step off...

The plan at this point is that I will depart the Streaky Bay CFS station at 0745 on 01/10/2025, heading east on Montgomery tce, south on east tce, west on park av, continuing west around the sports club/school, east past the caravan park, along the beach/waterfront park up the main st and back to the CFS station for a bit over 5km…. Hopefully will take me an hour or so, and repeating every week day for the whole month, aiming for a bit over 120km.
Because first responders (and military veterans - I'm both) tend to be over represented in mental health problems, I’ll be wearing CFS wildlands firefighting uniform whilst I walk.
Anyone who likes to walk is more than welcome to join me, anyone who is good at fundraising or getting sponsorship is extra welcome.
