Nikki

I've been 'there', the doubt at the back of your mind, that you don't notice, you try your hardest to swim but every success isn't enough to feed that black hole that sucks every bit of light. Mine materialised as a black dog, a black monsterous canine beast that would stalk me from the shadows, mocking me. I gave him a name - Manitou, so there i could hold his gaze and declare, you hold no power over me. Family and a few close friends helped 'a bit', my dog at the time, Floss was my strength and just dragging myself out to go for waks and talk to her (dogs give no judgement), really helped, so hence my walking 'it out'. Being out in nature, grounding oneself and making sure that entity that lavished over you being down and withdrawn has no power over you. So i am walking for all those stuck in the dark, you are not alone, there is a way out, just take One Step Forward, one small step outside and vegin the journey to free yourself

Support My Walk for Mental Health Research

Did you know that 1 in 5 Australians experience a mental illness each year?

This October, I’m taking part in One Foot Forward to help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.

I'm walking to raise funds for Black Dog Institute to put ground-breaking new mental health treatment, education, and digital services into the hands of the people who need them most.

It would mean so much to me if you donated to support my walk.

Together, we can create better mental health for all Australians.

My Updates

Snug falls walk

Who else had Snug Falls on their Nikki-walk-bingo! I managed to rope in a friend to join me and we walked the 2km to Snug Falls after the Antarctic blast that swept over Tas in the earlier part of the week, so there was a little bit more flow and the moss was all plushy green ^_^. Snug Falls is one ofmy favourite places, but I barely get there more than twice a year. i I should really do better

Short and sweet long beach walk

Well, compared to Seven Mile Beach, Long Beach isn't exactly that. But it's flat, easy and breezey, and surprisingly walking around to Blinking Billy point and back to Seagrass restaurant ia a simple 2km ^_^

On the bingo cards: seven mile beach

Out and about over the river today, may as well throw a sneaky 6km (1hr 40mins) in and walk along Seven Mile Beach (one day i hope to walk the entire length, but i may need to start earlier than after lunch. Managed to get passed the airports fly-in section and snapped an appropriate pic fir the occassion, what a beautiful day to arrive in/home Tassie.

Passive km's on a town trip

Curious about what an 'amble around town' clocks up? Well I did, so round trip from carpark, we walked about going to our haunts and wracked up a couple of k's more ^_^ good'o.

Alum cliffs track

Today's walk, I returned to the Picnic Basket in Taroona to start my walk. Walking along the Channel Hwy southbound to the Shot Tower and the beginning of the Alum Cliffs Track. The first down-up gully is a killer for the legs, but the rest is really lovely with moments of cliff/water view. Popping out at the Dog Beach end of Kingston Beach, walked along the beach, getting a dose of dog, grabbed an icecream at the takeaway shop, then headed in the direction of Kingston Gateway to get to bus stop 38 and the free ride back to the Picnic basket and car

3oct, taroona walk

Starting at the Picnic Basket, I walked along the Channel Hwy towards Truganinni Track at the northern Taroona boundary - nice and flat going. On the way back, I dropped down Karingal Crt, to the high school's overflow parking area and walked around the river front of the high school, picking up the foreshore track which led to Taroona and then Hinsby Beach. Ascending the stairs to Wandella Ave gets the legs burning, but the view is amazing. Popping out at Wandella Ave, it was quick to get onto Barina Rd, up the fairly gentle hill, then back onto the Channel Hwy and returned to the Picnic Basket. All in all about 6.5km under a leisurely 2hrs.
