Support My Walk for Mental Health Research
Did you know that 1 in 5 Australians experience a mental illness each year?
This October, I’m taking part in One Foot Forward to help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.
I'm walking to raise funds for Black Dog Institute to put ground-breaking new mental health treatment, education, and digital services into the hands of the people who need them most.
It would mean so much to me if you donated to support my walk.
Together, we can create better mental health for all Australians.
My Updates
Update 7 oct
After 5 days of anxiety about riding I finally managed to overcome the demons and enjoyed a beautiful ride along the breezy southern ocean coast. I was happy to manage my heart rate and my cadence so that I didn’t blow up. only 20km but a great first ride. Share
#1 - Why Mental Health
Hello, thanks for reading my One Step Forward page.1 in 5 Australians deal with mental illnesses every year.
In my case I was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 disorder in 2016. I then spent 4 months in a Swiss psychiatric hospital. Then a few years ago I was diagnosed with Complex PTSD. Unfortunately, suicide thoughts/plans are inherent to most mental health disorders and I have my own demons. I struggled to hold down a job for many years and eventually retired for health reasons. Relocating to Hopetoun is all about having more good days.
I like to help people with mental health challenges whenever I can. I am accredited for mental health first aid and I have undertaken suicide prevention training with Lifeline.
Prior to my Bipolar diagnosis I was an avid endurance cyclist riding 300-350km per week. Due to my mental health illnesses, medication, etc I have hardly been able to ride my bike. This is despite planning and then failing to ride on many days, weeks and months during the past 10 years.
Therefore, my One Foot Forward challenge is to be able to ride 100km by the end of October. I’ll be training and testing myself physically and mentally on the out and back loop from Hopey PO to 12 mile. If you see me please give a toot. Despite my riding experience starting again is going to be a big challenge.
Finally, I know there are plenty of people worse off than me, but all I can do is look after myself while supporting others - such as thru the Black Dog Institute.
I am determined to succeed and would be delighted if you would like to support me.
