I’m walking in solidarity this October for Australians affected by mental illness and suicide. Particularly those closer to home, family, friends, and widers circles dealing with hardship behind closed doors. You are not alone. I walk for you 🫢

Support My Walk for Mental Health Research

Did you know that 1 in 5 Australians experience a mental illness each year?

This October, I’m taking part in One Foot Forward to help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.

I'm walking to raise funds for Black Dog Institute to put ground-breaking new mental health treatment, education, and digital services into the hands of the people who need them most.

It would mean so much to me if you donated to support my walk.

Together, we canΒ create better mental health for all Australians.

My Updates

100km done!!

Yay! I can say, I successfully completed the 100km walk in OctoberπŸšΆβ€β™€οΈπŸ₯³ with 8 days to spare! Amazing achievement for me, with working, being a mum, a wife, and social & volunteer committments, competition golf etc. As well as supporting a loved one with depression (unfortunately with another down during the month πŸ˜”). I was able to fit in the walks by walking at 5am, and then getting home by 6am-ish, and then would start the day, getting kids out the door for school & myself for work. I found I was so hungry by like 10am with all the walking, and then tired early in the evenings! I also listened to x3 books on Audible, and will only recommend x2 lol πŸ“š I walked a total of approx 17 hours and 44 minutes. To put into perspective, this is like; ● walking from Alyangula to Umbakumba with 3 hours to spare ● walking from Darwin to Humpty Doo, and then back to Darwin ● walking from Cairns to Mossman one way ● walking from Brisbane to Caloundra Many have done more, or faster, or ran these distances, but for me, this was a huge one that I am proud of! Remember to check in on your loved ones, your friends, colleagues, and even strangers. Someone is always dealing with something, even if you cannot see it. Thank you to my sponsors, appreciate the support πŸ’›πŸ’› Stay humble 😌 and support those around you 🫢 #OneFootForward #are you ok #Alyangula

Depression & sleep 😴

As I make my way through this challenge, I often think about one of the major signs that I missed, particularly in teenagers. "Sleeping more often, for longer peiods & at abnormal times of the day.." It's easy to miss this in teenagers as they generally do all of these, sleep more often, stay up all hours of the night etc. How do you differentiate between commonly expected sleep behaviour of teenagers and the sleep of depression? Things I noticed were, constant dark room, in bed most of the day even when they slept the night before, tired at school reported from teachers... If you notice any one or a combination of these things, then act now! πŸ‘‰Do a "check in" πŸ‘‰ask often "are you ok?" πŸ‘‰offer to "hang out & watch a movie" πŸ‘‰ask to "go for a walk together" πŸ‘‰suggest to "take the dogs for a walk" πŸ‘‰suggest to "cook or bake together" πŸ‘‰run a bath for them The importance is noticing, and checking in, making them feel loved and taking their mind of the darkness they feel in that moment. Even if its "normal" behaviour for them, you would be glad you made an effort, it might be the "check in " they needed after all 🌞

First day first walk!

Was pumped to walk my first walk. I had been walking all week just to get ready for the 1st of Oct. I usually like to walk at 5am on a work day, it's the only time I can fit it in during work. It's nice & cool still which is rare for 1st Oct for the NT. Soon I'll be dripping in sweat in the build up's humidity! I like to listen to a book on Audible when I'm walking alone. I've already started an audible book this week, it's called The Road by Cormac McCarthy & it's a great read so far! I like apocalyptic movies etc and this book is very descriptive and feels like you can see the desolation & ash as described! Anyways it kept me motivated to walk lol A good start to the walk for October!

Why i'm doing the walk

This walk is important to me for a few reasons, some close to home & some not so. I'm hoping to raise awareness of Mental Health, normalise talking about it, what signs to look out for, prioritising regular check-ins, understanding that it is a disease/illness and getting help is ok. I'm keen to learn more about adult & youth Mental Health & how I can identify early signs & provide meaningful support. I hope my actions & support can make a positive impact on those in need πŸ’›
