Nakkara Johnson

I stand in solidarity with every Australian impacted by mental illness and suicide. Having faced my own struggles, I know how important it is to keep going, find support and remember that no one should have to face their darkest days alone. I walk for hope, healing, awareness and the courage it takes to keep showing up, even when life feels overwhelming. Through my One Foot Forward 40km challenge, I want to help raise awareness, support mental health research and remind others that their lives matter. My pledge is to keep speaking openly, to listen without judgement, to support those doing it tough and to remind people that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Together, we can break the stigma, create connection and help people see that there is hope beyond the hardest days. No one should have to walk alone.

Support My Walk for Mental Health Research

Did you know that 1 in 5 Australians experience a mental illness each year?

This October, I’m taking part in One Foot Forward to help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.

I'm walking to raise funds for Black Dog Institute to put ground-breaking new mental health treatment, education, and digital services into the hands of the people who need them most.

It would mean so much to me if you donated to support my walk.

Together, we can create better mental health for all Australians.

My Updates

15km done — one foot forward 👣

Walked from Casuarina to the Waterfront this morning and 15 km done! 👣 It felt surprisingly easy today. I just took it one step at a time, enjoyed the walk and met some great Darwin people along the way. High fives all round! There’s something pretty special about reaching your destination and still feeling like you could keep going. That’s a good feeling heading into my 40 km challenge. One Foot Forward — one step at a time. 💪

Still training

My baby is unwell, so right now my priority is being close to home and making sure my little one gets better. I’m still doing what I can to keep my body moving and my fitness going. Some days that means a walk, some time on the treadmill, or simply getting up and moving whenever I can. My 40 km One Foot Forward challenge is still important to me, but being Mum comes first. I may not be able to train exactly how I planned, but I’m not giving up. For now, I’m taking it one day, one step and one kilometre at a time. I’ll keep moving where I can, stay consistent where possible, and get back out there properly when my little one is well again. One foot forward. Always.

One foot forward | day 2 complete 💪🏽

12.8km done today, and I MADE IT TO THE BEACH! Woohoo! 🌊 Day 2 was definitely an eye-opener. My feet are sore, I struggled, and it took me over 3 hours to complete today's walk. With my 40km One Foot Forward challenge coming up, I'm starting to understand just how big this goal really is. I'm not going to lie. I'm feeling stressed about whether I'll be able to achieve it. But I'm also proud of myself for showing up, pushing through and making it to the beach today. That feeling was worth it! My doctor has advised me to take it easy because of my health, and I need to listen to my body. I'm going to take this one day at a time, focus on my recovery, and see how I progress week by week. There's no point risking my health trying to prove something. Will I achieve the full 40km? I'm not sure yet. But I'm not giving up just yet. I'll keep putting one foot forward, celebrating the small wins and doing what I can safely manage. This journey is about more than kilometres. It's about mental health, resilience, and reminding ourselves that progress doesn't have to be perfect. Day 2: 12.8km. Beach reached. Another step forward. ❤️ Follow my journey and support my 40km challenge for mental health research. #OneFootForward #MentalHealthMatters #Day2 #OneFootAtATime #MentalHealthResearch

Building strength. building endurance. one foot forward.

Daily training is underway as I prepare for my 40 km walk at the end of next month. Every session is another step towards building my strength, endurance and confidence. One foot forward, one kilometre at a time. The goal is simple: keep showing up, keep pushing myself and be ready to take on those 40 km for mental health awareness with One Foot Forward.

My plan route

“My planned route is approximately 40 km, starting at 6:00 am from Darwin Esplanade in the city. 📍 6:00 am — Darwin Esplanade, Darwin City 📍 1:00 pm — Palmerston Recreation Centre 📍 6:00 pm — Casuarina Square — finish The estimated walking time is around 9 hours, so I’m allowing myself the full day to complete it. The timing will depend on how the day goes, how many stops I need to make, and of course the Darwin weather. If everything goes to plan and the weather is on our side, I’m aiming to reach Palmerston around lunchtime and Casuarina around 6:00 pm. 40 km. One day. One foot in front of the other.”
